Cristiano Ronaldo sex assaults

What happened

In 2010, world famous soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo was accused of sex assaults by Kathryn Mayorga the woman who claimed to be the victim. Although Ronaldo himself and the us prosecutors denied the claims, Kathryn would not back down, forcing Ronaldo to pay a fine of $375,000 dollars to make a stop of publicizing the allegations. This payment made the public believe that he was admitting it as the truth. However, in 2018, 8 years after the incident, he tweeted “I firmly deny the accusations being used against me. Rape is an abominable crime that goes against everything that I am and believe in.

My thoughts

After reading this issue, I instantly put myself on Ronaldo’s side. Although I know that even celebrities can cause crimes as much as normal people, they are more frequently targeted, because they have the need to protect their reputation, so the plaintiff can gain money, or in many cases they just want to ruin the celebrities career simply out of hate. This made me think of how hard being known to them public must be. Being famous means you have fans who support you but  you also have people who hate you and try to destroy you. I think it is important for us to have a bit of sympathy and try not to make their lives even more difficult than it already is. They entertain our lives and we need to be more greatful!

Maybe you can relate this to some instances of abuse allegations in the Japanese context, such as the Shiori Ito sexual assault allegations that led to a lawsuit and counter lawsuit, and the sexual abuse allegations against the Japanese talent agency founder Johnny Kitagawa, which resulted in official apologies from his agency and the first criminal investigation into sexual abuse in Japan's entertainment industry. In the US context, there was, of course, the movie producer Harvey Weinstein's sexual assault accusations by many actresses that set off the "Me Too" movement.

I think you're right that some of the allegations made against celebrities are malicious and unjustified, but many of them are true but difficult to prove in a court of law beyond a reasonable doubt. Assault usually happens behind closed doors.

  2. Yuko’s comment: I felt that this blog entry was especially interesting to me because I have been curious about fake accusations against celebrities for a long time, ever since first knowing about the Johnny Depp divorce case. Situations like these always make me wonder why accusations tend to move in favor of the alleged victim or the first one to move, no matter how hard the accused tries to defend themselves. It seems almost impossible to know the truth when the trouble happens privately between two people.
I would like to ask the writer how she thinks we can verify what actually happened in such intimate cases. I am also curious as one who is researching on advanced technology whether she thinks advanced AI could play any role in helping us judge or define these cases more fairly.
